The SRG office in Portland. A design geared toward quality of work, relationships, and energy

The firm of SRG Partnership's new 17,054-square-foot studio, designed by themselves, is located in the former Oregonian press house, located on the ground floor of the historic 1948 building designed by renowned architect Pietro Belluschi. The unobstructed, barrier-free, light-filled space offered an opportunity to explore a new office concept that could continue to evolve the firm's practice and culture while demonstrating the firm's commitment to design excellence, sustainability, and well-being. The original steel crane rails were retained to recognize the building's historic function and structure

The SRG office in Portland is equipped with a series of spaces designed specifically to encourage collaboration, spontaneous conversations and curiosity. An open library of materials in the mezzanine is easily visible and accessible to all. A central kitchen area, the heart of the studio, encourages camaraderie and doubles as a meeting space. Open project platforms, where teams display work in progress, are active meeting and learning areas that inspire ideas and dialogue. Finally, a dedicated space encourages design exploration and creativity

To complement the open and transparent layout, the design offers options to accommodate different work modes using a mix of desk locations and densities, as well as private areas for small teams or individuals to retreat and focus when needed. The mezzanine workspaces overlook the main level in order to accommodate staff who want quieter, but still connected spaces

Based on the belief that "buildings are habitats for people," the spaces intentionally connect to nature. Lush trees outside the oversized windows complement the interiors' already abundant plant presence; ceiling fans mimic natural breezes for thermal and airflow variability; the east-facing row of windows provides dynamic, diffuse light that shifts throughout the day. Rough concrete blends with sustainably produced cross-laminated timber (CLT) of the mezzanine, in the kitchen and at the entrance
