Algiers Road, a contemporary extension of Gruff shaped like a saw tooth designed for a London family, adds 30sqm to the existing Victorian house, using wood and concrete and a small budget

The Gruff studio, which designed Algers Road, completes the extension of a house in South London through a striking wood and concrete upgrade. The client's brief was for a larger living area, with intimate family spaces for the whole family just to be entertained in

The hearth became the focal point: a solid, sculptural concrete fireplace situated in the center of the extension. All around, a charred larch siding folds seamlessly into the pergola, creating a bold and distinctive profile that accentuates the concrete shape

The rear glazing consists of minimally framed sliding panels that offer long unobstructed views through the house to the garden and beyond. Inside the extension Gruff has a variety of attractively designed spaces including a kitchen, a dining area, a quiet area for reading and a sunken lounge area

The open space areas are defined by a warm textural palette combined with a series of internal level transitions, with deep blue and polished concrete finishes which offers an intimate but contemporary vibe.
Algiers Road offers an inviting, open and multifunctional extension
