Redevelopment of Strasbourg's Municipal Spas. A delicate balance between an iconic historic space and the demands of modernity

Built by architect Fritz Beblo beginning in 1905, Strasbourg's Municipal Baths are an iconic site in the city. Very dear to its inhabitants, the building had to be restored and its interior reworked so that it could, once again, continue its function while traversing history

Located at the crossroads of the medieval city of Strasbourg and the Neustadt, a district resulting from the extension of the city by the German Empire 1870-1918, the Strasbourg Municipal Baths building opened its doors in 1908. Revolutionary for its time, the building manages to combine technical concrete with architectural eclecticism, a building of ancient and neo-regional inspiration. Located in the heart of the UNESCO perimeter, the building has been classified as a historic monument since 2017. When it opened, the site offered a variety of amenities: indoor pools, public showers, sauna, solarium, and even a dog grooming area

The redevelopment had to meet several objectives: enhance the existing building, restore some elements and decorations, ensure the safety and accessibility of the building, renovate all the technical equipment, and design contemporary furniture as it is appropriate for the users of this facility to expect. In short, to anchor it in our time without sacrificing its incredible original qualities

"This is not a building that leaves you indifferent. When you come for a visit, there is a very clear poetic relationship with space and light. It is full of charm. It is an ancient and neo-regional inspired building. This balance is fragile and it is necessary to preserve it," says François Chatillon, founder of Chatillon Architectes office
