The project "Couch-19", realized by Atelier Tobia Zambotti, highlights the problem of pollution due to the incorrect disposal of disposable masks which are medical waste and cannot be recycled conventionally in a creative way

The pandemic that had to be faced on a global scale during the last year was completely unexpected. To cope with the contagion, many countries have forced people to wear masks in public places. One of the problems that has arisen as a result of this obligation is the difficulty of recycling disposable masks

In fact, masks are disposable medical waste and can only be disposed of by incineration, causing a large amount of toxic fumes and contributing to global warming. The alternative is that they are not disposed of properly, ending up on the ground, polluting and disfiguring the environment

The project "Couch-19" tries to solve this problem by involving the inhabitants of Pergine Valsugana and Trento and asking them to collect the dispersed masks. In a short time, several cubic meters of white and blue masks were collected, then sanitized and they became an unusual padding for the modular pouf made of transparent PVC. The final result is a "glacial" color, due to the color of the white and blue masks, which together with the irregular shape of the pouf, create an experimental furniture object that is similar to the formal characteristics of icebergs, one of the most iconic symbols of global warming
