Space Frames: sculptural lights as jewels in an architectural space

The giant sculptural lights act as landmarks in the large open spaces of the mall attracting visitors to and below them and encouraging social interaction. The Space Frames unveiled at Intown Futian, Shenzhen are the largest of their kind and specially designed and manufactured in China, while the smaller versions - one at King's Cross in London, others were displayed at COS in Coal Drops Yard and are still available for purchase from MDR Gallery - are made specifically by Dutch design studio Mieke Meijer

At Intown Futian, the most archetypal of the Space Frames is the great arch of light: historically, the arch foreshadows an entrance and is as such a sign of identity, a threshold to something different that appears through the arch. For visitors to Intown Futian, it is a gesture of acceptance, inviting them to pass through its light and explore the place

The three-dimensional frames of these light-sculptures, made of super lightweight aluminum, are designed to respond to the surrounding architectural environment. The architectural scale of Intown Futian required large-scale Space Frames. The result visually connects the different levels of the architecture and creates a playful installation, like a waterfall of light

The Space Frames ring acts as an architectural jewel. While the ring is not a complete circle, it certainly suggests that it is. With the many meanings a circle has in different cultures it leaves room for imagination for all who visit Intown Futian
