The restoration of an architecturally valuable building for the new headquarters of Unilever Benelux in the heart of Rotterdam

In the heart of Rotterdam on Hofplein, the new headquarters of Unilever Benelux occupies six floors of a 1960s concrete-framed building designed by architect C.A. Abspoel. The new Unilever plant will house about 750 employees

Upon entering the sixth floor of the new Unilever Benelux headquarters, visitors are welcomed into the Lipton Bar, which shows a beautiful view of the city. From here, all floors are accessible by internal stairs. The interior changes envisioned in the design by Mecanoo architecten, who were commissioned for the redevelopment, involve the horizons creating gaps that connect the various floors and consequently the company's employees. Upon entering, the auditorium, the so-called "Town Hall," immediately stands out. This, as well as the event space and restaurant are multifunctional and can be used for events, conferences, and catering

The interior of the new Unilever Benelux headquarters is designed like a city with streets and shops-a true Unilever City. Multipurpose cabinets interspersed with the concrete structure form a street in the center of the building. These serve as Unilever's interior storefront. Products can be displayed in the cabinets, and these can also be used for calls, discussions, or quiet work. The workplaces of the various Unilever departments are located for this internal street, each with its own identity, branding, and distinctive features

The mix of work areas, rooms for meetings, calls, consultations and presentations, and all other uses creates a dynamic environment for activity-based work. Unilever employees can find a suitable place for each activity. This stimulates collaborations, knowledge exchange, meetings, and because there is more movement through the building, it also promotes health

The materials used reinforce the industrial character of the building. Black steel, oak, floor and tiles form a neutral base, giving space to showcase Unilever's products and marketing
