Made of Sand was conceived as a flexible and creative space for family, friends and local artists. The retreat offers those who wish to connect with nature and their art an independent space within the quiet property. Passionate about music and creativity, clients Tom Baker and Natalie Silk commissioned Studio Weave to design an extension that can be lived in separately from the main cottage, but is gracefully grafted into the rural landscape while adopting a contemporary appeal

Made of Sand, an extension to a secluded property in the Blackdown Hills, named for the historic sand quarries of the area, is a wooded retreat for creativity that complements the rebirth of the stone cottage, a London family vacation home
Studio Weave designed a striking two-story cubic addition with a geometric wooden facade and large openings. A restored stone staircase on the east elevation encloses the new space between the existing cottage and the hillside
Made of Sand replaces a pre-existing garage and workshop in disrepair. Studio Weave designed the new 85-square-meter wing around the old cottage, creating a floor plan of two L-shaped areas that connect internally. A dedicated entrance hall, then a stainless steel kitchen lit by stained-glass windows leads to the ground-floor suite that opens onto the large wildflower meadow at the front of the property. Upstairs, the living space seems to extend into the trees, offering uninterrupted views of the Blackdown Hills
Materials and craftsmanship play a key role in anchoring Made of Sand to its environment. Outside, panels of Red Western Cedar dialogue with the wood of the surrounding forest. Inside, natural materials including clay, terra cotta, brass and Douglas fir create a warm environment. Made of Sand is highly insulated and soundproofed to allow artists and children creative freedom during retreats and family vacations
