In a central neighborhood of Bangalore, India, the design for the Aadyam residence is implanted on an already initiated construction site which did not satisfy the clients: a young couple along with the elderly parents of the husband. They desire a home that is both traditional and comfortable, yet also dynamic and hybrid, adapting to the style of all its inhabitants

The Gaurav Roy Choudhury Architects studio works on the Aadyam house project using the existing structure and following the strict guidelines from the clients based on the principles of Vaastu, which dictate the position of most spaces. A design scheme is used with staggered levels that fit together, ensuring natural light and ventilation, and both unifying and distinguishing the different areas of the house

The ground floor becomes the traditional space, dedicated primarily to the elderly parents: a bedroom and the living room, both overlooking a narrow front garden; the kitchen that opens up to the dining room; and finally, the family temple connecting to the side garden. The service areas are grouped in a lower height block, above which lies the mezzanine and the elevated garden

The elevated garden becomes the heart of the house, offering pleasant views to both the ground floor and the first floor; it is also the central source of light and ventilation for the home. A gallery runs alongside it, opening up with tall folding glass doors. The first floor revolves around the mezzanine and houses two bedrooms with a large hybrid space in the middle that aligns with the central garden: a space that serves as a den, library, lounge area, AV room, and a second living room for the couple

The west suite features a cut in the volume that separates the bathroom and sleeping areas, through which the crown of the tree from the garden below peeks, simulating an inner courtyard. The southeast bedroom opens up to the elevated garden with a large window. The northeast corner of the first floor is left open with planters protecting it from neighboring houses. This area is dedicated to a gym and outdoor living space. The roof houses the studio, a quiet and secluded space that overlooks the elevated garden through wide windows

Another key element that defines the architecture of the Aadyam house is the complex frame geometry of the stairs: the Steel Space frame, a central vertical column that connects all spaces. Two sets of geometries combine to create a spatial realm as one moves from the traditional ground floor to the buzzy energy of the upper levels, becoming the language through which each space perceives the other. Aadyam's spaces are extroverted and introspective, selfish and generous, double-dealing and honest at the same time
