Mexico City's Environmental Culture Center:its countless microcosms reflected in a garden

The Mexico City Environmental Culture Center is a controversial project proposed by the Mexican government. In an area where pure reforestation would have been preferable to a large construction, architecture emerges that satisfies both needs by elevating the forest above itself

The architects from Vertebral studio design a discreet gesture for the Mexico City Environmental Culture Center that lifts the forest of Chapultepec Park over a long portico; this allows for the reforestation of the area and the development of the CCA below it at the same time. The geometry and layout of the Center, with its majestic wooden structures, allow for an organic flow through the park and, once inside, reveal Chapultepec at various levels

Mexico City is a basin of countless microcosms. Therefore, Vertebral proposes a garden that reflects this historically complex vegetative system, planting the CCA with a scheme that follows various transitions until it intertwines with the existing landscape. From wetlands, it moves toward areas of cacti and volcanic rocks, and it concludes with pines and tall perennial vegetation that encloses and shapes the contour of the valley

Chapultepec is not just its nature but also its social and cultural dynamics. The forest is a living diary and a testament to history: Jacaranda plants are placed to commemorate the passage of other Mexican cultures; cacti and Yucas honor indigenous communities... Every element in Chapultepec refers to the cultures that are the matrix of the city and its complex history
