Architect Nic Brunsdon was commissioned to expand a historic cottage on the outskirts of Perth, Australia, where the most important part of the house is the north garden, a large empty space in which to inhabit nature

The addition to the existing building affects the northern façade, and is characterized by a simple, linear form. The north face of these spaces is covered with sliding doors and allows the interior to open up to the outside, creating a sort of "garden room"

The south wall, on the other hand, features much more dynamic elements: a tall triangular fireplace, a curved shell facing north, a tall round cylinder for a service bathroom. On a conceptual level, the house is divided into four parts: the existing brick cottage, a connecting entryway, the ground floor and second floor addition

The entrance serves as a mediation: to the left is the existing, renovated cottage to the right is the garden room with bright, open living spaces. Above these spaces is the master suite, a masonry room. The building becomes almost secondary in the whole project due to the importance given to the garden
