The Family House in Orava- Slovak tradition with modernity

In the project of the Family House in Orava, the main goal was to create a building with a form and details derived from traditional regional architecture, ensuring harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape. At the same time, the architects had to meet the requirements of the client, who expected high standards of modern housing and recreation

Inspiration and concept

The prototype of the Family House in Orava drew inspiration from traditional houses from northern Slovakia, characteristic of the remote settlements of the region. A.LT Architekti designed three identical volumes, two of which were set on a stone plinth.  This solution made it possible to preserve the authenticity and characteristic style of the area, while adapting it to modern needs and functional requirements

Balancing privacy and community

The stone plinth not only defines the private zone, but also levels the steep slope of the land around the building. Placing the houses close to each other, delineates spaces that can provide security and privacy in contrast to the open landscape. This proximity creates an atmosphere of togetherness while guaranteeing a quiet space for residents to relax and unwind

Materials and technology

An important aspect of this project was the incorporation of traditional building materials such as wood, stone and ceramic tiles in order to continue the historical traditions of the region. The building was founded on reinforced concrete footings supporting brick or concrete walls in places. The floor structure consisted of joints with clay panels between them, while the roof was made of wooden trusses and covered with ceramic tiles. In keeping with the sustainable approach, the building was fitted with an underground heat pump

Embracing regional aesthetics

Finishing the external walls with spruce cladding, painted in a grey, along with using local sandstone for the lower plinth accentuates the authenticity of the regional style and ensures the house blends well with its surroundings. The local aesthetic is also preserved indoors through the use of oak floors, polished concrete, and spruce ceilings, as well as by incorporating traditional, scrubbed spruce in built-in furniture
