Outdoor for textile workers in Prato: Perimetro project

Perimetro (Perimeter) is the redevelopment project of the outdoor area around a textile factory in Montemurlo, province of Prato, Italy. A reworking of the area exclusively dedicated to production to give it back to the workers and the city through nature

From storage areas to social and natural spaces

Renna Studio, together with Cosimo Balestri Studio, is responsible for designing the outdoor spaces of a textile factory with the aim of transforming them from storage areas and goods handling to social and natural spaces. A new green perimeter Perimetro, interspersed with functional areas, to reconnect production, people, city, and nature. The intervention works to support biodiversity by also reusing rocks from excavations and tree trunks that needed to be cut down as garden installations highly appreciated as refuges for insects and small wild animals

Comprehensive sustainability

Perimetro is designed to be sustainable, both environmentally and socially. The new green areas offer facilities for work, but also for social gatherings, interspersed with parking lots and logistics areas. Additionally, a new small square redefines the access to the factory and offices. The fence surrounding the lot, made of a black metal mesh, allows the new gardens to be appreciated even from the outside

69 new trees of 12 different species

From an environmental perspective, in addition to the new planted vegetation, a significant positive impact is provided by replacing the asphalt pavement with a drainage one that allows to increase the soil permeability level from the original 17% to 40%. Thanks to the careful green project that involved the planting of 69 new trees of 12 different species, maintenance and irrigation needs are minimized
