Renovation of the Piknic 2020 Cultural Center in Seoul

The renovation involves a Goshiwon (a shared house) built of red brick in 1990 at the foot of Seoul Namsan Mountain that is being transformed into the Piknic 2020 Cultural center: a complex cultural venue that coexists with a cinema hall, bar, restaurant, and designer stores

Structural Adaptations for a Harmonious Space

A partially buried second floor, a second floor accessed by external stairs, a third floor that faces the retaining wall, a fourth floor that meets the ground floor of the next plot, and a terraced roof with an open view. This is the structure that Indiesalon architects face in transforming the existing building into the Piknic 2020 Cultural center. In the design, each level not only contributes to the new identity of a harmonious building, but also accommodates in its core all the basic functions

Multifunctional Interior Layout

Inside the Piknic, we find the Hoehyeon restaurant on the second floor, a cafeteria on the second level, a "sub-artistic" picnic space on the third floor, a store on the fourth floor, and a rooftop terrace. The entrance to the building was originally only one, and accessibility to the various levels posed quite a challenge

Innovative Access Solutions

The architects responded to this by projecting the restaurant outward, visually expanding access to the interior stairwell leading to the second floor, and finally creating a new entrance to the exterior staircase leading to the upper levels

Embracing the Building's Identity

Indiesalon decides to reinforce the red color of the bricks that characterizes the building, using it as an identifying marker in the public's impression, using different materials and trendy finishes of the same color. The designers take the building's imposing red identity and combine it with the red of the modern era and, in this way, bring out the classic feel of the original brick and the harmony of the new materials
