Restoration of the PPc apartment: Harmony between old and new in a historic building in Bari

The PPc apartment is located in a historic building dating back to 1920 in the elegant Umbertino district of Bari. The essence that shapes this renovation is that of memory and harmony

The architectural firm Annalisa Macina - ARCHITETTURA + DESIGN follows the guiding principle of enhancing the memories of the place in its intervention. This is achieved by incorporating the ancient handmade cement tiles into the refurbished designer furniture and showcasing the art collection belonging to the clients' family. Thus, the memory is harmoniously integrated with the contemporary architectural language and the housing needs of a couple with three teenage children

The traditional cement tiles have been salvaged and reassembled with a new design or purpose: they now dialogue with the parquet flooring or serve as a covering to enhance the essential design of the sanitary fixtures. Additionally, the original entrance door with colored glass and wrought iron decoration has been restored, while also being adapted to meet modern security standards

The 180-square-meter apartment has been divided into shared spaces in the living area and more private and independent spaces in the sleeping area. In the dining room, the Match suspension light by Vibia has been conceived and configured as a link between the fluid spaces of the living area. Thanks to a series of sliding doors, the entrance, kitchen, dining area, and living room can be separated as needed. The new furnishings, mostly custom-made, are contemporary and minimalistic, aiming to enhance the richness of the interiors without overpowering the historic elements
