The Cal Gall complex, consisting of a rural house and barns built in 1800, is being transformed into a residential project with various housing units, revaluing the real estate heritage of the owning family
The renovation of the house and outbuildings is entrusted to the Spanish studio Taller SAU. Perched on the Catalan Pyrenees, the village of Bellver de Cerdanya provides the backdrop for the new image of the Cal Gall complex. Five new housing units, with independent access, are distributed around the central courtyard in the ancient rural buildings brought back to life by the recovery intervention
The project involved the construction of new floors and the total renovation of the roof, made with dry construction in laminated wood. These interventions strengthened the original stone walls by combining new and old construction technologies. The roof is insulated with 28 centimeters of rock wool; the geothermal wells, made possible by the high water table, heat the rooms and sanitary water with minimal energy consumption. These eco-friendly technologies, combined with careful consideration of natural cross ventilation, make Cal Gall an example of energy efficiency
The new residential units are organized following two axes: the vertical one, from bottom to top, and the horizontal one from south to north. On the ground floor, each unit hosts the living area overlooking the central garden; on the upper level, the sleeping area. In the two floors of the houses, the main rooms, living room and bedrooms, are oriented to the south while the bathrooms and stairs face north, creating a sort of thermal and technical cushion, allowing the systems to be grouped together
