Restoration of the ancient The Clerk's House for the Emalin art gallery

A delicate and respectful restoration of a piece of Shoreditch's history, London. The Clerk's House is brought back to life to host contemporary art pieces

The oldest surviving building in Shoreditch

The Giles Reid Architects studio, previously responsible for the first Emalin gallery location, is overseeing the restoration of The Clerk's House. The London residence, designed by George Dance the Elder, was built in 1735 next to its contemporary St Leonard’s Church. Once the home of the church cemetery guards, it appears to be the oldest surviving building in the Shoreditch neighborhood

New exhibition space highlighting the building's history

The renovation of the house was carried out to allow the contemporary art gallery Emalin, managed by Angelina Volk and Leopold Thun, to establish its second location in the city. The works involved the removal of non-original interventions that were in an advanced state of decay and the creation of a new exhibition space on two floors that highlights the beauty of the history

Blue Ceilings and Georgian Boiserie

Inside The Clerk’s House, at the back of the ground floor, a new office, a kitchen corner, and a bathroom are now located. The ceilings in this part of the building are painted in Georgian blue, echoing those of St Leonard's Church. The spaces of the old house are completely restored, including the Georgian boiserie that adorned them, some dating back probably to the Sixteenth century, predating the building itself
