Restoring to Reveal the Origin, Casa Kala in Porto

The charm of an ancient villa in Porto, Portugal, is brought back to its glory through a renovation by Ren ItoArq, which has highlighted its style and uniqueness.

The Future is in the Past, Reviving a Forgotten Life

The building, designed by Januário Godinho, a renowned Portuguese architect, had been unused for nearly 10 years. The roof and floors had collapsed, and over time, the structure had progressively deteriorated. The challenge for RenItoArq was to restore the enchanting villa to its former splendor without losing its essence.

The Exterior and Layout of the Villa

The almost rectangular building is situated in the center of the area and spans four floors, including a basement and an attic. It sits at a higher elevation than the street level and is accessible from the southwest via a ramp. Additionally, it is flanked on the north side by a one-story building originally used as a garage and laundry room.

Interiors of the Villa and Its Fascinating Spaces

On the first floor, the renovation has revitalized a characteristic entrance, two guest rooms, a reception, a dining room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The second floor, meanwhile, houses five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The design of the hall and staircases has been kept as close to the original as possible, and even the plastered ceiling and chandelier, though renewed, are as close to the original as possible. The complete renovation was carried out maintaining the original design while renewing and securing all spaces.
