The beauty of the Split View Mountain Lodge between form and materiality

The holiday home Split View Mountain Lodge, designed for 4 people, is located near the village of Geilo, a popular ski destination in the Hallingdal valley, in Norway.

The client's request

The clients are requesting a simple proposal for their mountain retreat: four bedrooms, separate living and dining areas, a room for the youth, and a mezzanine for younger children; finally, a small guest house to accommodate visiting friends and grandparents. The response from the architecture firm Reiulf Ramstad is a construction with a clear and clean design, clad in wood on the exterior walls and roof. Surrounding it, the landscape offers in winter several ski resorts and in summer excellent opportunities for hiking and other sports.

Architectural Details

The building consists of a main body, which houses the bedrooms, and branches that follow the natural contours of the landscape, dividing the living areas into two. The separate space of the annex is located as an extension of the main body and completes the volumetric composition that characterizes the lodge: 3 blocks that end with fully glazed facades projecting towards the landscape.

Natural Materials and Interior Design

A room with polished in situ concrete flooring serves as the base for the cantilevered glass volume and becomes the filter zone where you can leave boots and jackets upon entering the house. A wooden staircase ascends from the basement and opens up to the spacious living area, covered by a complex sloping ceiling. At the center of the vacation home, where the wings housing the dining room and living room branch out from the main body, is the kitchen. Its worktop made of fiberglass and reinforced concrete cantilevers into the center of the space and is anchored to a double-sided fireplace at the other end.

Mountain Refuge

The extruded shape of the structure frames the spectacular views from inside the cabin, while smaller strategically positioned openings along its volume offer glimpses of the surrounding environment. The elevated levels of the living and dining areas provide its occupants with a high degree of privacy. The internal floor, walls, and ceiling are uniformly clad with virtually knot-free wood, while all window frames are either hidden or discreet. Attention to detail and high-quality materials are consistent throughout the project. The construction of the Split View Mountain Lodge is the result of a deep understanding of architectural projects for the mountain environment, with creative and sustainable solutions.
