The client's wish was for a special private residence in Amsterdam. The objective of the Studio Firm was to create an honest, masculine and architecturally sound space with as much usable space as possible. A sustainable, unique and tailor-made apartment
The Firm designed and built a conceptual living environment from the ground up. The journey through the apartment begins when you open the front door. The hall is painted black and the old staircase is bare and rough. Above is a custom perforated zinc staircase that connects the apartment to the rooftop terrace. Light from the roof skylight shines through the perforations to the dark entryway. If you look up, you can see the sky
At the top of the living room stairs, the gaze is directed outward through the sliding glass door, which takes up the entire width of the building. The door profile is hidden, which creates the effect of an almost frameless glass facade in a place where there were originally only two small windows
The living room is an open light space that can be connected to the master bedroom by means of a large wooden sliding wall. To make the space as large as possible, the architects chose to place a single volume in the space. All other functionalities such as bathroom, toilet, laundry room and guest room are hidden in this reflective box. Access to it is made invisible by a revolving door finished in the same materials
