The Blue Bottle Coffee Shibuya café in Japan is located just a short walk from the vibrant atmosphere of the downtown area. Designed by Keiji Ashizawa Design as an urban retreat nestled between two parks.

Warm and welcoming atmosphere

Walking through Kitaya Park in Shibuya City -Tokyo- you will encounter people relaxing on Ishinomaki Lab benches while sipping on great coffee: it is here that the large curved counter of Blue Bottle Coffee welcomes customers. A warm and welcoming atmosphere of the spaces, designed by the Japanese interior design projects studio Keiji Ashizawa Design, accommodates consumers on two floors.

The artisanal counter

The tiles covering the counter are finished with a special glaze made of volcanic ash, a key material to connect the interior and exterior and were developed as a collaboration between the London-based material producer Dzek and the Amsterdam-based design studio Formafantasma. Throughout the café, over 7000 tiles have been carefully laid by a single artisan.

The seating

On the ground floor of Blue Bottle Coffee Shibuya, there are tables of different heights, a tall counter with stools for people to watch the art of preparing excellent coffee, and lower tables to enjoy the view of the park even from indoor spaces.
Moving up to the second floor, you will find a variety of seating options designed to meet the needs of different customers at different times of the day.

A private area for absolute relaxation

At the back of the space is an area at a slightly lower architectural level, with benches covered in a warm autumnal orange fabric that can be separated from the main area by a curtain, creating a small private space. An oval table in the center adds to the informal atmosphere. At one end, a low tiled coffee table is surrounded by comfortable lounge chairs and sofas for ultimate comfort and relaxation.

An inviting atmosphere like that of a dear friend's home.
