Interior for Felix Meritis in Amsterdam. Distinct and charismatic design inspired by art.

The Studio i29 Architects has designed the interior of Felix Meritis drawing inspiration from the history of the building, where each space refers to a specific period. The starting point was to showcase the diversity of the five departments: Music, Commerce, Literature, Physics, and Design

Every space is characterized by an identity

This unique building on Keizersgracht was constructed in 1788 for a society of scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, and thinkers. It was a hotspot for creativity during "The Enlightenment". The starting point of the project was to showcase diversity and give each room its own identity, just like in 1788, where each department was given its own interpretation.

Complete Renovation

The building has been completely renovated in collaboration with a large team of specialists and consultants; new installations and acoustic systems have been carefully integrated within the monumental shell. The architects at MATH were responsible for the structural renovation. The plan is based on restoring the outline of the original building, where necessary installations are completely concealed by a new raised roof.

Restaurant, reception, and art

The new interventions carried out by i29 Architects, specialized in interior design projects, are in contrast with the existing classic environment. The entrance area includes a restaurant and reception that are modern interpretations of 18th-century style rooms where original colors and finishes are applied. For the restaurant, the image of a typical Dutch sky has been translated into a tactile covering. i29 collaborated with Buro Belen for custom design fabrics that match materials and colors. A light installation connects the two rooms to create a grand entrance with a modern "chandelier" hanging from the ceiling.

The challenge, maintaining monumentality while adapting to the present

The biggest challenge was bringing this monumental building into the "present," not only in terms of technology, installations, and acoustic systems, but also in appearance and experience.
In line with the original philosophy of the Felix Meritis society, the new interior is modern but created with respect for its history.
