The Living Pavilion designed by Behin Ha Studio and installed for the annual Annecy Paysage Festival, is suspended in an upside-down garden in Notre Dame Square in the historic center of Annecy, France, using a modular system of milk crates

The pavilion features a wooden structure open on three sides, and uses a modular system of plastic milk crates to support the plants at the top and allow them to grow, even after the pavilion is dismantled

Liriope plants are first grown in the boxes in an upright position, then installed on the pavilion and removed at the end of the summer season to be grown in a suitable environment, thus allowing the pavilion to be regenerated in different locations from year to year

The exterior shape is inevitably reminiscent of the hipped and pitched roof forms of Annency's historic downtown buildings. The interior, with its unusual garden, "softens" the harsh downtown landscape and provides a shaded environment in cooler weather

The pavilion makes contact with the ground at three points and formally also echoes the geometric shape of three sloping cube sides. Inside, the inverted lawn invites visitors to consider organic nature in such an anthropic context
