SLETH architects' expansion of Tønder's historic town hall, a classic public office building was the winner of a 2013 architectural competition. The addition introduces something new to the already existing structure, a transparent, completely informal building that opens onto the old town hall and creates a common space for employees

The design concept was a desire for dialogue between the structural heaviness of the old building and the lightness and delicacy of the new. The aim was not to create competition between the two buildings, but to make them work together and complement each other
