Pitched roof for a rural house in Santader. The roof preserves the original distribution of space

Zooco Studio redesigned an old rural house by using the existing building, accurately reproducing the local building system consisting of stone walls that support a wooden gabled roof with tiles inside the spaces developed in sequence

The nature of this architectural project is based on absolute respect for what already exists, respect not only for the original materials used but also for the type of space created inside the house. The sequence consists of kitchen/dining room/living room/office/bookcase and develops in a linear pattern, under the same roof, only the master bedroom is separated from the general space, hidden behind a bookcase. A second bedroom, accessible by using the external stairs in the original passageway at the entrance of the building is located above the main one, to complete the elevation of the adjoining building.

The only changes to the existing architecture are those made to the facades. The existing openings have been enlarged on the east and west oriented facades, with the idea of incorporating nature into the interior, while the north and south facing facades have been completely widened. Another notable feature of the house is its privacy system consisting of sliding slits on the south-facing facade, giving users full views of the exterior.

The expanded building was designed from a more rational perspective with an L-shaped configuration, almost in contact with the existing building, but not touching it, facilitated the creation of an open space between the buildings. The intervention has adopted the existing style, local woods, local stone, white facades and tiles collectively constituting the aesthetics of the unit. The concrete and metal structure represent a contemporary counterpoint to this exceptional example of traditional Cantabrian architecture.
