The Czech architectural studio TRI.STRNAST architekti decided to preserve only the monumental stone walls of the old barn. A new wooden house is built between them, preserving a ventilated gap between the old and the new building

The house is intended for an elderly couple who are fulfilling their dream of living in the midst of nature after a life spent in a concrete skyscraper. For this reason, during the project, many considerations were made about possible future limitations of movement by depriving the ground floor of thresholds and designing a bathroom for the disabled

The project is located in the small Czech Republic municipality of Stará Červená Voda, on an estate where there was originally a barn with agricultural equipment and a stable at the back. There is a small multifunctional square between the house and the studio which is located in the middle of the whole plot

The structure is composed of KVH solid wood beams that are assembled with very few fasteners, while blown cellulose was chosen for insulation. To improve the accumulation capacity, the perimeter walls are covered with unbaked bricks and plastered with clay on the inside

The exterior is made of carbonized spruce wood, a Japanese protection method called "shou sugi ban" thanks to which the surface is protected both from atmospheric agents and from fungi and microbes. The windows and doors are made of wood with triple glazing and covered with galvanized sheet metal, while the roof is made of black folded sheet metal
