Wooden Cottage in the Magdalen Islands in Canada. Modern shapes and natural materials

This second house is located in the Magdalen Islands, opposite the Western Dunes and the sea. The clients are a retired couple who spend a few months a year in this cottage designed by the architects Bourgeois/Lechasseur

The house was inspired by a formal exploration of sand patterns seen in a Wallpaper Magazine exhibition in London

The dimension of the structure is inspired by the traditional local architecture and the natural shapes of the dunes swept by the wind. Because of its shape, the house appears to be carved from a sand monolith. The side walls follow the slope of the roof and extend to the edge of the deck to create a pleasant space sheltered from the wind. The entrance is concealed in the reinforced side wall, providing protection from the weather

The living spaces are located on the ground floor in an open space with a cathedral ceiling. There is also an office and a guest room with a bathroom on this level. A skylight adorning the facade illuminates the living room. This feature is a subtle homage to the local architecture. The master bedroom is located on a loft. This private room cantilevers out over the deck and towards the horizon

The house is covered with sand-coloured cedar shingles. This material is used on almost all houses on the islands due to its ability to withstand salt air

The jagged parts are covered with warm brown semi-transparent wood panelling. Each window overlooks a different type of landscape. In addition to the dune and the sea, you can see the foxes running nearby
