Multipurpose center in Matagorda. A volumetric tetris concept of a clear, compact and organic architecture

The design for the Multipurpose Center in Matagorda starts from the premise of being a compact and simple architecture, adapted to the urban delimitation and defined in municipal planning, in close relationship with the cultivated landscape under the expanse of greenhouses typical of the region in which it is located, Alméria in Spain

The Multipurpose Center building in Matagorda designed by the firm Fresneda & Zamora Arquitectura focuses on the northern boundary of the lot, relating to the main road and freeing up the rest of the land in order to dedicate it to reception space and a viewpoint towards the imposing "sea of plastic"

The building is characterized by volumes of different scales, forming a volumetric "tetris." The result is a clearly ordered, compact and organic building. The services housed are diverse: there is a sports field, classrooms-laboratory, meeting rooms, restrooms and locker rooms. The volumetric fragmentation of the whole relates the interior to the surrounding outdoor open space, procuring an ever new transition between the two through covered intermediate places

The building's construction choices are developed by making rationality, efficiency, economy and reasonableness the values that satisfy a necessary budgetary constraint, facilitating execution and ensuring a good durability of the work. The structure is developed with simple stainless steel porches that allow the application of criteria of transparency, double lighting and ventilation of interior spaces

The exterior image of the building is characterized by the cleanliness of the white precast concrete walls to which are interspersed shading sunshade panels placed in front of the glazed parts.  The prefabs used vertically as sunshades, create a layer of visual and thermal protection while regaining on the horizontal plane of the floor their original function as a lawn-practice. The play of shadows between volumes and the contrast between the different textures and their levels of opacity give plastic qualities to the whole
