Luxemburg the details of one of the 10 most beautiful bookstores in the world

The historic Luxemburg Bookstore in Turin opens a new location in the heart of the city, inside the charming Subalpina Gallery. A project that combines contemporary architecture, excellent design, and respect for tradition.

Reopening with style: the charm of reading in the heart of Turin

The project of the new headquarters of Libreria Luxemburg, a historic Turin bookstore founded in 1872, is designed by the BRH+ studio, renowned for interior design projects and renovations, which was also entrusted with the redesign of the visual identity. The headquarters is located in the charming Galleria Subalpina, an elegant 19th-century passage that connects Piazza Castello and Piazza Carlo Alberto, in the heart of Turin's historic center.

A historic library projected into the future

Founded way back in 1872 under the original name of Libreria Beuf, Libreria Luxemburg is a true reference point for the international publishing industry. From a small shop in post-unitary Turin, it has become one of the most prestigious and long-standing bookstores in Italy, also recognized by foreign press as one of the ten most beautiful bookstores in the world.

The new headquarters: contemporary design coexists with historical elements

The new headquarters of the bookstore is born from the union of three real estate units, for a total area of 216 sqm, subject to a deep renovation. The project combines heritage and innovation, integrating custom-made furniture with the restored iconic historical elements.

Every detail is designed to offer a unique visiting experience, also thanks to the creation of a literary café adjacent to the bookstore.

Lighting and design made in Italy

One of the central elements of the project is the installation of designer lighting, developed in collaboration with Ilti Luce and Nemo Lighting, excellent Italian companies. The intervention is the result of a careful lighting design study, aimed at enhancing every space in the new headquarters.

Custom-made furniture and precious materials

The new interior furnishings and display cases are made with precious materials such as wood, Bellagio marble, and Giallo Siena, thanks to the artisanal skills of the historic Sommo Marmi. The design complements the refined ceramic collections of the Mutina brand:

  • The central counter of the cafeteria is decorated with Rombini by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec.

  • For walls and floors, the Fringe collection by Michael Anastassiades was chosen.

  • The ceiling of the checkout area is covered with Adagio, a ceramic series by Ronan Bouroullec.

  • In the bathrooms, we find the Fringe and Mattonelle Margherita collections by Nathalie Du Pasquier.

Italy's smallest literary café

The new café at Libreria Luxemburg is the result of a collaboration with Caffè Baratti & Milano, a historic brand from Turin. Located in a cozy setting overlooking Cesare Battisti street, it covers just 13 square meters, making it the smallest literary café in Italy.

A new visual identity between tradition and innovation

The new visual identity of the bookstore also bears the signature of BRH+, which has reinterpreted the historical logo by recovering, in a contemporary key, the iconic symbol of the owl, the distinctive symbol of Libreria Luxemburg.
