The architectural projects of JGMA studio are guided by the philosophy of social justice and urban regeneration, with a focus on creating deep connections between built space and community. The Neal Math & Science Academy serves as an exemplary model: its design included significant efforts to engage local residents in order to better understand their needs. People felt invisible, so the architecture responds with a colorful, tall, dynamic, and inclusive building that becomes a landmark for the neighborhood

Architecture full of meaning

The project of the new school irreversibly raises the quality standard of educational spaces thanks to its rich and varied program and an architecture full of meaning. Active learning and socializing are the new focuses favored by outdoor study spaces, common areas for socializing, and sports. The symbolism enclosed in progressively ascending the 5 floors of the building as knowledge is acquired responds to the intimate need to be recognized and to see further expressed during the design phase. The Neal Math & Science Academy becomes the tallest building in the neighborhood and, like a beacon, instills hope

Celebrating diversity and inclusivity in a new connection with the neighborhood

Built next to the old school building, the Neal Math & Science Academy retains its valuable location within walking distance for students, discouraging car use. An extensive green area equipped connects the school to the nearby residential area, while community spaces such as the North Chicago Community Partners room, the Learning Stair, and the common dining areas promote connection between school and neighborhood. The colorful exterior of the building with its double-gradient skin with dynamic design celebrates diversity and inclusivity
