Open Park Villa: from military area to residential haven

Open Park Villa in Limburg is a residential park area created by the transformation of a former military terrain. The outcome is a carefully crafted residential haven with 43 spacious plots, characterized by tranquility, ample space, and the enchanting embrace of lush surroundings

Preserving history, embracing nature

The Open Park Villa project stands out for its meticulous adaptation to its diverse environment, making it a perfect example of harmony between architecture and natural surroundings. For i29 Architects, the priority in this project was to preserve the existing road network and green structure, ensuring minimal disruption to the environment while maximizing the area's natural charm. The interplay of greenery, varying site levels and long sightlines creates a multifaceted living experience

Blurring boundaries: indoor-outdoor living

Unlike the fragmented uniformity of a single compact exterior volume, the ground floor's spread-out living layout forms as one interconnected interior space. Incorporating a central patio strengthens the unity of the entire ground floor design, providing ventilation, natural light, and additional space. This link blurs the distinction between indoors and outdoors, intensifying sightlines and lengthening them. Natural light plays a dynamic role throughout the day, shifting and highlighting different spaces and occasionally returning to specific spots later in the day

The villa's varied volumes and sculptural facade

The villa comprises five interconnected volumes that vary in size and placement, resulting in a diverse exterior appearance from each side. The use of consistent minimalist details on the facades and canopy, constructed with clip bamboo, enhances the sculptural quality of the structure

Defining spaces with heights and finishes variations

The living space is nestled within the landscape, continually shifting the perspective of its residents and enhancing the overall spatial encounter. Varying ceiling heights and interior finishes highlight the uniqueness of each room, defining its function and character

Craftsmanship and quality materials

The quality of the interior in this project is additionally emphasized by custom-made furniture and built-in closets. The highest quality materials are used throughout the building, such as oil-impregnated oak wood panels, seamless cement flooring and Grigio Alpi natural stone base elements and staircase

Oak veneer variations in living spaces

Cabinets made of dark oiled oak veneer were used in the entrance, kitchen, living room and lounge, while light oak veneer was used in the bathroom and walk-in hallway. In areas like the bathroom and ground floor office, white-painted open ceilings are paired with light oak cabinets, while natural fir wood is utilized for open ceilings in the living room, ground floor lounge, and upstairs bedrooms. In the kitchen and bathroom, the architects decided to install closed ceilings. The toilet area located near the entrance, constructed with brick, was finished with a lime wash
