SON Cascina San Carlo. Residential services and civic pavilion in Milan

SON Cascina San Carlo, in addition to the restoration of the 1915 farmhouse and the enhancement of the public park, is a project that encompasses a range of social and residential services located within two residential buildings and an open pavilion for civic and public activities in the Crescenzago neighborhood of Milan

The project of SON Cascina San Carlo, curated by B22 studio, includes two new buildings that accommodate pairs of apartments for parents and children with cognitive fragilities. On the ground floor, there are welcoming and bright spaces, characterized by large windows that open onto the surrounding green areas. Illuminated by large skylights oriented towards the park, on the first floor, there are rooms designed to accommodate support figures for the families

In the existing building and the newly constructed pavilion, there are two associations and a room equipped with a kitchen lab, open during the day for civic and public activities, and reserved in the evening for families. A new orchard and the reclamation and planting of a public urban area complete the SON Cascina San Carlo project

The project aims to create an inclusive place that also serves as a discreet landmark that lights up like a lantern in the evening, making it visible to the neighborhood. The relationship between living spaces and natural elements - light, landscape, the passage of time and seasons - is at the heart of a physical and social project. Materials, shapes, and colors are the result of careful research on the domesticity of places, extended to the perceptive aspects related to cognitive disabilities

The project, subject to a specific urban and volumetric agreement with the public administration, is carried out within the framework of the "Dopo di noi" law, which protects the rights of people with disabilities who are left without family support, and is entirely funded by private donations and fundraising
