Symbolic value of ruins and urban regeneration in Simala

In the central-western area of Sardinia, an experiment of urban regeneration in Simala connects past and future by capturing the evocative richness of historical ruins intertwined and enhanced by the new public space

A project of interpreting historical traces

Architect Martino Picchedda approaches the urban architecture project with a sensitive and contemporary approach that transforms a 19th-century courtyard building into a public and exhibition space for the community. A work of interpreting historical traces as "layers of meaning" that restores to the ruins the role of narrators of what once was. The work of cleaning up the dilapidated structure immersed in overgrown vegetation becomes a cathartic ritual of rediscovering the roots of the place

Ancient walls as a backdrop for the present

In the new public space, the ancient walls become the backdrop of a theatrical set design ready to contain the present. The architect draws inspiration from the visionary Piranesi and the material poetics of Alberto Burri and their mastery in interacting with pre-existing elements. Thus, fragments of "tellas" from the stone pavement are recovered and reintegrated into the project, the basalt laid on a draining layer becomes the walking surface where residential spaces once stood, while in the courtyard, the typical "impedrau" flooring recalls traditional courtyards

A project to recognize the roots and enhance the essentiality of materials

In an architectural gesture that "does not seek to dominate but to listen," the project by Simala tells and recognizes the roots of Sardinia, with its stories of hard work and everyday life, embracing together the regenerative future. The project enhances the essentiality of materials: existing masonry is consolidated and treated with ecological lime plasters; the exhibition setup is minimal to leave the stage to the remnants of history
