The house Tabares de Cala reclaims its function after decades of neglect
The single-family house, located in the historic center of the city of La Laguna, Tenerife, has been in a state of complete abandonment for decades now: the intervention returns it to its original use as a single-family home
Over the years the house has been transformed, expanded and sometimes damaged. In the mid-20th century it underwent an extension of the rear. Alejandro Beautell's intervention consists of fully rehabilitating the building, restoring its use as a single-family house, and remodeling the interior distribution to suit the new needs of the owners
The house's patio was covered by a metal and glass jutting structure. A new steel staircase, providing access to the rooftop terrace, was designed in the same location as the pre-existing one. New windows and doors were introduced in the previously blind rear facade to provide light and ventilation to the rooms, and which are creating a new, modern facade facing the courtyard square
The ancient roof, given the advanced degradation of its wooden structure, had to be completely dismantled and restored while fully respecting and preserving its type and layout. The old tiles that were in good condition were used as a cover for the new ones to preserve the aged appearance and homogeneity of the roof covering
