Ten Boomgaard. Seven new starter homes around a collective garden

Ten Boomgaard is a project for the new construction of seven houses for young people, couples, and singles, inspired in its layout by the Beguinages, traditional architectural complexes that ensured protection and privacy to the life that took place within

Architectural composition. The Beguinage

Ten Boomgaard, designed by WE-S architects, is located on a corner lot in Bruges, Belgium. Here, the Beguinage, settlements where religious women retired to live together, characterizes the urban fabric. In the same way, the seven new homes create a living space that lies between private and collective, recalling in the volumes that gather around a common outdoor space, the compositional and aesthetic characteristics

Exposure of the houses

Ten Boomgaard consists of two autonomous volumes that open, on one side, onto a communal parking area and, on the other, onto a bicycle storage and the collective garden. Both buildings feature vertical partitions on the facade that emphasize the division into the 7 terraced houses, further highlighted by the roof slopes that follow the same pattern. The envelope of each individual house descends from its highest point to embrace the next, connecting them to each other while at the same time maximizing the natural light that, unobstructed, reaches the garden

Distribution of interiors and moodboard

The project attempts in various ways to update the Beguinage typology by proposing small-sized houses grouped around the collective garden. Both the internal arrangement and the aesthetics of the materials subtly refer to traditional design, using a brown gradient base in the facade combined with washed white brick in the upper part
