Monsoon House in Thrissur: theatrical connection between space and time

A sprawling residence that seamlessly blends tradition, luxury, and familial warmth. The Monsoon House pays homage to Eastern architectural heritage, keeps traditional craftsmanship alive by weaving it into its spaces, provides its inhabitants with comfort and opulence while evoking a homely atmosphere.

Inspirations of the place

The Monsoon House, designed by the Taliesyn studio, is located in a picturesque setting, caressed by lush rice paddies swaying on the horizon in the hinterland of the state of Kerala, southern India. An external approach to the architectural structure of the dwelling facilitates a conversation between the built volume and the verdant landscape that embraces the house. An extroverted design that allows the material part of the building to delicately lean against the light facades. The residence is designed to create a series of spaces filled with natural light, taking advantage of the building's orientation.

Suggestions and connection with nature

Monsoon House embodies a minimally invasive and simplified form of architecture that integrates materiality and vernacular methodologies with overall design. The identity of its design is rooted in Indian influences, with timeless patterns and material interplays reminiscent of traditional heritage homes in Kerala. The layout emphasizes open-flow spaces, shared family areas, and the skillful and discreet integration of service areas. The uninterrupted dialogue with nature is predominant in architecture projects like this, where it is a design focus for both clients and architects.

Architecture of spaces

A comprehensive program revolves around a central courtyard that becomes the heart of the house, with living spaces designed around it, divided over two floors. Natural views have been framed by large openings, thus integrating the living spaces with the surrounding greenery. The walls stop short of connecting with the structural horizontals, forming gaps in the architectural envelope that facilitate natural ventilation.

Precious Materials

Marble and a myriad of stones are used to create a rich structured look and an environment that creates an immersive space. The consistent use of Tobacco marble, Serpeggiante marble, and mosaic dot the expansive surfaces of the residence. The ancient craft of inlay has been sprinkled on the walls of the house, on the floors, and even on the ceilings.
