Architecture, sea and energy sources. Housing solution against natural disasters

Currents for Currents, designed by the Dada Studio, is a housing solution for vulnerable coastal communities where homes are powered by the tides and solar energy collected by technologies incorporated within the units themselves.

Population growth and global warming are particularly damaging to coastal communities trapped between land scarcity, tides and storms that desperately need safe and sustainable shelter. With "Blue is the new green" as its design philosophy, Currents for Currents is a housing solution for both the vulnerable coastal communities and the lack of reliable energy infrastructure in these vast areas.

The houses are powered by both tides and solar energy collected by technologies incorporated within the units themselves, making the entire community completely self-sufficient. These collection systems do not only provide each unit with a sustainable primary energy source, but also a livelihood and a source of income. Although originally designed in the Filipino context, the modular design of these houses, as well as the use of a universally available material for its main structural frame - moulded plastic - allows it to be implanted in and at any coastal site.

The project aims to introduce an architectural design that creates a self-sufficient community while preserving its unique values. The tidal generators will serve as a multi-functional version of modern houses on stilts. Instead of moving the community to give rise to these structures, the idea is to create an interdependence between them. The project will provide an inclusive and adaptive design solution. The electricity produced by generators that are not used by the community will be transferred to a power plant for redistribution to nearby cities.
