The Garden House in the City for a new social dialogue

Christos Pavlou Architecture signs this residential project with a green soul, aiming to discover a new urban life that interacts with nature, intending to create green spaces that are terraces and gardens where the interior merges thanks to large windows.

Bringing nature back to the city: an urgent challenge

Christos Pavlou Architecture tackles with sensitivity and vision one of the most urgent challenges of contemporary architecture: bringing nature back to urban contexts. In a city like Nicosia, where public greenery has never been at the center of urban planning, the urgency to rethink living spaces became even more evident during the long months of isolation. During that time, we rediscovered the value of our homes and the essential need for outdoor spaces, giving new impetus to architectural projects capable of integrating nature, well-being, and quality of life.

The new priority of living outdoors

The need to go out, breathe fresh air, and connect with nature has become an essential priority. However, the pandemic has only highlighted an existing awareness: the growing need to transform cities into more livable and natural environments. The work of the studio is precisely in this direction, exploring creative solutions to integrate vegetation into established urban fabrics. The goal is to rethink how we live and design, promoting a more resilient and sustainable urbanity.

A house that opens up to the neighborhood and the park

The project proposes an idea of a dwelling that breaks the traditional boundaries between private and public space. The design emphasizes the potential of private urban gardens, capable of generating favorable microclimates, slowing down global warming, and improving the quality of life. The architecture of the house builds a fluid relationship with the neighborhood, the park, and the garden, where elements like the building, the street, and the collective space merge into a single harmonious configuration. The house becomes part of the landscape, and the landscape enters the house, eliminating any rigid separation.

Green architecture, between aesthetics and sustainability

At the core of the project is the integration of vegetation within the dwelling: 60% of the ground floor is dedicated to garden planting, while the first floor features a green terrace. Spaces for biodiversity are also planned, including environments favorable to bees and around 40 species of native wildflowers. The interior spaces revolve around a central green courtyard, a key element connecting two white cubic volumes, promoting continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces and enhancing a holistic view of contemporary living.
