Renovation in the Valtellina Alps. Wood and stone as the distinctive elements

Renovation of a building immersed in the nature of the Valtellina Alps as a home for a young couple, using solid oak wood and local stone as the dominant and distinctive materials

The renovation project of the building, located in the Valtellina Alps arose from the need for a home for a young couple. The site is located on a plot that enjoys a panoramic view of all the facades and the architect chooses materials such as solid wood and local stone

The connection between the new building and the existing building is through a structure that partly overlaps the pre-existing and partly acts as a supporting structure of the roof, through pillars that support a succession of trusses. The frame is made entirely of solid oak and its large dimensions give the complex a unique materiality, while the eastern and northern fronts are covered with local stone, like the pre-existing part in the south

The space between the pillars to the south-west makes it possible for light to enter during the day in the winter months. Additionally, the use of trusses on the roof makes it possible for the gable to be emptied, leaving room for large windows which frame the beautiful surrounding landscapes from the inside

Coming through the garden, the dining and living areas consist of a double height space. While the living area extends above the loft, a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen are located below. The bright interior is characterized by solid wood and white walls and the few internal divisions make it possible to have a view of the panoramic windows from different angles
