Restobar Mama- a sustainable restaurant in a park

In the new Vrijheidspark park in Maastricht, Netherlands, rise a series of oval green spaces and a round pavilion, Restobar Mama

Integration of nature and architecture

The Restobar Mama pavilion, designed by Ketting Huls Studio, consists of a round concrete terrace, a rectangular volume, and a round steel canopy. The carousel building sits in the center of the park's oval plaza, surrounded on one side by the children's play area with hidden fountains and on the other by the terrace's tables and chairs

Sustainable features and innovative design

From the circular openings in the terrace, trees grow upward beyond the steel beams of the canopy. Inside, the steel structure continues as a laminated wood beam construction with a concrete column in the center of the building. The restaurant and kitchen form a T-shaped space with large glass facades. Sometimes the circular steel canopy and trees are decorated with lights, ornaments and climbing plants

Environmental consciousness

The pavilion has solar panels on the entire roof, an Epc of 0, and is not connected to the gas grid. The outdoor unit of the heat pump is integrated into the building volume and is located behind a wooden grille of the facade, along with most of the other necessary air intakes. The masonry facade is made from a leftover batch of terracotta bricks from the manufacturer Janinhoff. There were no mounting pieces or corner stones available. Some of the blocks were therefore sawn, vertically or horizontally, to achieve the desired design
