Lighting of the facade of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence

The lighting project of the facade of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence creates an "almost physical" empathy between architecture and human beings. A dynamic light that makes the history of the building and its illustrious figures pulsate in unison with the emotions of passersby

Theatrical dynamization of architecture

The lighting design project for the facade of the famous Basilica Santa Croce is carried out by the studio MICROSCAPE architecture urban design AA on the occasion of the F-Light Festival 2016 and was highly appreciated by the Superintendence of Artistic Heritage of Florence, so much so that it was maintained as permanent lighting. The theatrical dynamization of architecture is created by the variation in intensity and color temperature of the white light emitted by 22 MaxiWoody Compact Tunable White LED projectors and controlled by the DMX system

“illuminating by exciting and illuminating by illustrating”

“illuminating by exciting and illuminating by illustrating” are the two objectives of the lighting proposal that, programmable in a loop, alternates static phases with a sequence that highlights the various bands of the facade, the statue of Dante facing it, ending at the central rose window with a ballet of different intensities and degrees of warmth. All this while saving 68% compared to previous energy consumption

Light as the narrating soul of architectural space

The idea behind the project is to transform the facade into a membrane that emanates "the spirit and ideas of the illustrious figures who reside in the Basilica." Light becomes the narrating soul of the architectural space: through the emotions it evokes, it tells the memories of history, engaging and radiating contemporaneity. Ancient and modern, monument and city, architecture and person pulsate in unison through light
