Organic architecture for Ayla Golf Academy & Clubhouse in the desert

Oppenheim Architecture designs the Ayla Golf Academy & Clubhouse drawing inspiration from natural waterfalls and the surrounding desert mountains. The architectural form establishes a unique connection with nature, capturing the beauty of the undulating desert landscape.

Architecture in the desert

The innovative and organic design, created by Oppenheim Architecture, of the building forms the core of the development of a mixed-use resort, Oasis Ayla. Its 1,200 square meter size is part of the first phase of a 44-square-kilometer recreational development currently under construction in Aqaba, which includes residential, hotel, and commercial spaces, all centered around an 18-hole golf course.

Shapes and inspirations

The unique architectural form of the Ayla Golf Academy & Clubhouse establishes a special connection with nature, a huge shell of concrete covers the built areas. The curved shell blends with the sand, simulating dunes. The openings provide views towards the spectacular mountains of Aqaba, and the perforated corten steel screen filters the light, similar to the traditional Arab "Mashrabiya". Jordanian motifs inspired the triangular pattern of the openings, while the tones of the surrounding mountains are echoed in the colors of concrete and metals.

Collaboration and cultural connections

The construction of architecture projects like this one is the result of a knowledge, techniques, and cultural exchange program between the architecture studio and the local workforce. Concrete casting techniques were taught to the workers in the early stages so they could take ownership of the construction and acquire specialized skills.

A local artist also contributed to shaping the building by applying a traditional pigmentation technique to the interior surfaces, ensuring a raw and unadorned look that remains true to its context.
