House GG. Shelter of light and measure

A single-family house on the outskirts of Udine interprets contemporary living as a balance between protection and openness, through an essential language made of pure volumes, natural light, and a constant dialogue with the landscape.

A project born from suspended time

Casa GG, designed by michielizanatta, is a single-family residence located in the outskirts of Udine, within a recently developed residential area. Designed for a young couple, the house takes shape during the pandemic period, when dwelling regained centrality and symbolic value. In that suspended time, the project becomes an act of trust: an architecture that chooses measure and simplicity to build an environment capable of welcoming, protecting, and at the same time opening up to the future. The house is not just a refuge, but an active space, in dialogue with the landscape and the rhythms of daily life.

Two volumes, a balanced equilibrium

The house is developed on a single level, organized in a linear layout composed of two distinct and complementary volumes. The first is a closed, compact, and opaque structure that houses the sleeping area and service spaces. It is a quiet volume, strict in proportions, designed to ensure privacy, comfort, and introspection. Adjacent, slightly set back, is the second volume: a glass pavilion, light and permeable, which accommodates the spaces for daily living — kitchen, dining, and living room — in a single fluid environment. Here, the project interprets in a contemporary way the theme of architectural projects capable of relating mass and void, solidity and transparency.

Coverage as a Mediation Gesture

The central element of the composition is the large cantilevered roof, a horizontal blade that visually unifies the two volumes and projects them towards the garden. This architectural feature serves a climatic and spatial function: it protects, shades, and at the same time extends the domestic space towards the outside, dissolving the threshold between interior and landscape. The house thus opens up to a larger dimension, where the garden becomes an integral part of the living experience and natural light marks the moments of the day.

Light, silence, and the architecture of measure

From a compositional point of view, Casa GG expresses a controlled tension between rigor and lightness, evoking suggestions of Japanese architecture reinterpreted in a local key. The project shuns spectacularity and privileges a few essential signs, materials, and a light that shapes volumes and surfaces. The continuous perimeter circulation and large sliding windows promote a fluid perception of spaces, transforming the landscape into a constant presence. In an ordinary urban context, the choice is to subtract: the house thus becomes a silent manifesto of an architecture capable of generating balance, serenity, and daily beauty.
