Total renovation of Casa MEQ: the multifunctional blue cube and recapturing the terrace

Just as Barcelona before the Olympics lived with its back to the sea, Casa MEQ had an impressive 50-square-meter terrace, overlooked by more than 7 meters, which it totally ignored: two small windows from the rooms and an 80-cm door in the kitchen connected indoor-outdoor

The architects of GOKO Studio, who were in charge of the renovation project, understood from the first visit to the apartment that one of the focuses of the intervention had to be making sure that the terrace was recaptured as a living space for the new inhabitants of Casa MEQ by connecting it functionally, spatially, and visually with the interior

For the MEQ family, the rooms, which could be only two for the time being but with the possibility of adding a third in view of the arrival of a new member, have an exclusively resting function. The architects therefore allow themselves to propose a large daytime space, in direct connection with the terrace, connected to the with the sleeping area by a blue cube: clean, attractive but calm, giving all the personality to an originally rather anonymous apartment

The blue cube houses multiple functions inside: it conceals the air conditioning system, houses two bathrooms, the bedroom closets, and a multifunctional closet that overlooks the living room. It also serves as a bench where you can sit to take off your shoes upon re-entering the house, welcoming the family when they return from their day of work and study with its gentle but playful vibration

To make the transition between indoor and outdoor terrace smooth, the architects bring the raised terrace floor into the living space, eliminating radiators and replacing them with ventilation grates on the step that create a barrier to the cold and disappear from view. On the terrace, two large skylights illuminating the ground-floor parking lot obstructed the continuity of the space, but a raised garden hides the flaw and creates a differentiated space for relaxing and soaking up the afternoon sun. The rest of the design revolves around color, light and wood
