The Innovative Market Redefines Rotterdam's Urban Landscape

The Rotterdam Market project resulted from the introduction of new regulations in the Netherlands, which required covering traditional outdoor meat and fish market areas due to new hygiene restrictions. In response to these needs, the architecture design firm MVRDV addressed two crucial questions: "Can we use this operation to create a new type of market and densify the city center?" and "Is there a possibility to improve the quality of these places?"

Mixed-use hub transforms the historic core of Rotterdam

The Market is part of the new inner core of the Laurens Quarter, the original center of Rotterdam before the war. The structure represents innovative architecture for mixed use. In addition to the market, located in the square area under the park, the building consists of an "arc" of apartments, strategically allowing private investments and initiatives to provide public space

Apartments designed to maximize natural light

The apartments, designed in accordance with the principles of Dutch architecture, adhere to Dutch laws regarding natural light: all rooms requiring natural light are positioned externally. Kitchens, dining rooms, and storerooms are placed on the side facing the market, creating a visual connection with its core.

The massive glass facade of the Market sets records

The front and back of the building are covered by a flexible suspended glass facade, allowing for maximum transparency and minimal structural work, the largest of its kind in Europe. This design feature not only provides ample natural light inside, but also offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
