Portlantis, architecture as a crossroads of experiences

A new and astonishing landmark has emerged on the Tweede Maasvlakte in Rotterdam: Portlantis. This cutting-edge visitor center shapes and gives voice to the Port of Rotterdam, telling the story of its internal operations and less visible aspects. As one of Europe's most important logistics hubs, the port is a vast and ever-evolving organism, committed to improving efficiency and sustainability. Portlantis guides visitors through understanding how the port operates, its economic and environmental impact, and the challenges it must overcome to remain forward-looking.

The architectural project that tells stories through experiences

Portlantis is conceived as a gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art where architecture, exhibition design, and interior design blend seamlessly. The uniqueness of the project lies in the process: the narrative concept and visitor experience were developed first and then guided the architectural project designed by MVRDV. This results in an integrated and dynamic system where content and form mutually reinforce each other at every scale.

Large panoramic windows on each level offer spectacular views of the surroundings, making the actual harbor an integral part of the experience. At the center of the building, there is a 22-meter-high atrium, animated by a kinetic installation and an interactive model of the harbor, visible from all floors and capable of capturing the energy of the place.

Icon between architecture and landscape

The iconic structure is composed of five identical volumes, stacked and rotated like containers piled with apparent randomness: a clear reference to the language of ports. An external red staircase wraps around the building and leads visitors to the freely accessible panoramic terrace, from which breathtaking views of the North Sea, the coast, and the entire port system can be enjoyed. An architecture that becomes a habitable landscape, capable of interacting with the industrial and natural context.

Dynamic Meeting and Knowledge Hub

Portlantis is conceived as a space for learning and networking. Students, schools, policymakers, and port professionals come together here, fostering exchange and collaboration. The exhibition path is structured around three thematic levels: TODAY, the port of today; IMPACT, its role and influence; TOMORROW, future perspectives. There is no set itinerary: visitors are free to explore according to their interests, engaging with interactive installations and multi-level content designed for different levels of expertise, in line with a new concept of architectural projects as open cultural devices.

Collaborative Design

Portlantis was born from a close collaboration between the Port of Rotterdam (client), MVRDV (architecture), and Piet Harm Sterk (art direction, Bind). From the early stages, the joint work ensured a perfect synergy between content and space. Content developers, spatial and graphic designers, lighting and sound specialists, interaction designers, filmmakers, and builders all contributed to creating an immersive and cohesive experience. An integrated approach that brings to life a place where information, wonder, and connection naturally coexist in architectural projects of the area.
