Renovation of a 1950s Terraced House. A new layout to create spaces for being together

The terraced house subject of the intervention is located in the quiet suburban area of Corstorphine, Edinburgh. A previous front extension had created a long, narrow kitchen, separated from the living room and the rear garden. The fragmented layout meant that the family living there was often in separate rooms: cooking, doing homework, watching TV, etc

The intent of the renovation project by AGORA architecture + design was to create a layout that would allow the family to spend more time together and bring the kitchen to the heart of the home. The solution was to create an L-shaped living space oriented towards the rear garden. The walls of the old kitchen and dining room were removed to open up the space, and the windows and doors were modified to maximize connections with the garden and the entry of natural light

In the front part of the house, in the old kitchen, an office/additional bedroom has been created. A cozy living room is located in the center of the space, equipped with a large fireplace. The kitchen and dining room are situated in the rear, strongly connected to the garden through glass openings. The exposed steel structure helps define the functional areas of the living space. The kitchen is treated as part of the furniture: appliances are hidden behind full-height oak doors, and the sink is within a niche. Full-height shelving creates a contemplative corner with seating around the window

Throughout the ground floor, a herringbone oak floor is used, and the color palette based on green and pink is adopted in the kitchen, on the walls, and on steel elements, as well as on upholstered items. This continuity of finishes, along with minimal details such as flush skirting boards, frameless doors, and transparent switches, help to create a sense of spaciousness. The resulting atmosphere is calm and relaxed, with enough space for hosting large family gatherings and friends, as well as for intimate evenings around the fire
