Between pine forest and sea: the new Pini Stadium in Viareggio

Sportium signs the complete redevelopment of the historic "Torquato Bresciani" Pine Stadium in Viareggio. A modern, sustainable sports facility, open to the city, capable of interacting with the landscape and hosting national and international sports events.

A renewed facility between memory and contemporaneity

The new Stadio dei Pini in Viareggio, designed and managed by Architect Giuseppe De Martino, Technical Director of Sportium, returns to the city a place full of sporting history, now completely renovated on a surface of 25,000 square meters. The project involved a comprehensive redevelopment of the facility, with 3,800 seats, a state-of-the-art athletics track, and reimagined services in a functional and accessible way. The result is a modern, high-performance complex capable of hosting national and international competitions, including the renowned Viareggio Cup.

Dialogue with the pine forest landscape

The design focuses on the relationship with the surrounding natural environment. Thanks to the calibrated use of materials and tones inspired by the colors of the pine forest, the structure blends in with the context without dominating it. The main grandstand has been redesigned with a new facade characterized by diamond-shaped geometric patterns, a contemporary reference to Burlamacco's checkered suit, an iconic mask of the Viareggio Carnival. A second grandstand with 1,750 seats has been built on the east side, maintaining the memory of the original curvilinear layout. The spaces below can accommodate flexible functions, expanding the use of the stadium beyond sporting events.

Sports Technology and Performance Quality

The project falls within the framework of architecture projects oriented towards maximum technical efficiency. The athletics track has been restored with a prefabricated sports surface finished in EPDM, designed to ensure durability and reduce maintenance costs. The natural grass football field has been constructed using technologies similar to those of the main Serie A stadiums. The changing rooms, support facilities, and hospitality areas have been redesigned to ensure comfort, safety, and smooth flow of movement, in compliance with international standards.

Environmental sustainability and nearly zero energy balance

Attention to sustainability, in line with the approach of Progetto CMR International, is a structural element of the project. The grandstand cover is designed for the installation of photovoltaic panels, while LED lighting ensures reduced consumption. The entire complex has been developed with durable materials and an energy strategy oriented towards NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building), contributing to reducing environmental impact and management costs. The result is a contemporary, technically advanced facility connected to the future of the city.
