Urban covered space in Alsasua: urban trees for social gathering

“Hiriko zuhaitza”, which means urban tree, is the principle that inspires the project for this urban covered space in Alsasua, a town in the northeast of Spain. Under the architectural branches of the new wooden structure, the public space offers new atmospheres for social gathering

Ecological wooden tree pillars

francesca fiorelli architectura - FFA with this urban architecture gives a new and recognizable identity to the square in the city center between the Iortia Cultural Center and the Frontón Burunda Sports Center. Through the wood of the "tree pillars" and the roof, the sensations infused by the urban space are those of domestic comfort and warmth, while the image of the structure refers to the forests surrounding Alsasua. The material comes from sustainably managed PEFC or FSC certified red fir forests in Central Europe

Branch-beams project radially creating an urban forest

A central “trunk” supports the roof and the “branch-beams” that project radially into space until they reach the perimeter pillars. The covered space is illuminated during the day by small cylindrical skylights and by circular LEDs housed in them at night, evoking the light that filters into the undergrowth from the cracks between the tree leaves. The plan and elevations of the new covered urban space are defined by the dialogue with its surroundings: the roof rises and falls to create the scenography, drawing visual perspectives and pedestrian flows in the square

Maximum respect for environmental resources

The architectural work by Francesca Fiorelli that won the design competition for the square was designed and built for the maximum respect for environmental resources. Every element is mechanized to ensure an assembly of the structure, through bolted joints, fast, precise, and reversible: a potentially dismountable and reassemblable meccano in other places
