Ashtanga Yoga Center in Chile: wood and light for the search of the soul

Architects Germán Rodriguez and Sergio Hidalgo create in Ñuñoa, Chile, a wooden structure that resembles a temple, housing a meditation center where yoga is practiced. Light is used consciously in the architectural design

The architecture that inspires the search for the soul

The architects of DX Arquitectos Studio, among their various architectural projects, design this building inspired by temple architecture. Ashtanga Yoga Center is characterized by silent, sparkling, dimly lit enclosed spaces that appeal to the search for the soul.

Light as the central element of the meditative space

The structure is designed in relation to light, allowing it to enter and illuminate the main room where the practical discipline is carried out. The light illuminates without dazzling, and is conceived as a line that divides the house from the school, illuminating the main hall from below and aiming to convey the feeling that the room is suspended from this line of light.

The light and the passage of time

Light is a line that tells the passage of time, the hours of the day, the seasons of the year. Where the light enters is also where the air enters and exits, where breathing takes place. Light speaks to us about the passing of time. It strikes objects as time flows. It is through it that we are aware of the endless passage of time, of its linearity and its cyclical nature. Not just light: the illuminated matter is also necessary. Therefore, the importance of shadow also arises from it.

The essential elements for inner practice

Designers Germán Rodriguez and Sergio Hidalgo draw inspiration from simple forms, echoes, air, wind, sunlight, the shapes of breathing bodies, and spaces that fill up during the practice of the discipline, essential for the inner gaze.
