Brückenkopf Bern, from an office building to a living space

Brückenkopf Bern, located in the Swiss capital, is a project to convert an urban "nonplace" into a livable space with the help of a heterogeneous mix of housing and other uses

On the western side of the Monbijou Bridge in Bern, an office building has been transformed into a heterogeneous residential building by architecture firm Bauart. The 1960s office building underwent a large-scale renovation in 2016. Together with the client, it was decided not only to renovate the building, but also to put it to a new use

The location Brückenkopf Bern is perfectly accessible through two urban levels, and its connection will become even more attractive with the future expansion of the Gaswerkareal. Due to the central location of the project, 53 small apartments, attics for one- and two-person family units, and apartments for short-term residents were chosen

In addition to the apartments, there is also a small restaurant at deck level, and communal uses such as a rooftop terrace, a laundry room, and easily accessible bicycle rooms enrich the diverse offerings. Integrated at the base of the building are leisure, sports, and shopping facilities that are directly connected to the new residential areas
